In the course of my chores I stopped at the market for some cornmeal pancakes which turned out to be a really bad move. I was feeling progressively worse through the afternoon until it hit with full force: vomiting, fever, and the turista. Well it wouldn't be cycle tour without a touch of food poisoning... I was lucky to have made it this far without getting it. I spent the evening moping around the hostel making frequent trips to the bathroom. There will be no getting on the bike tomorrow, at least one day of recovery is in my future. In the morning I was a able to keep down a couple of scrambled eggs so it doesn't look like it will be a protracted affair.
I still felt weak on Sunday, not good enough to take off on Monday. On Monday I took advantage of the downtime to do some major surgery on the bicycle, replacing the entire drivetrain from top to bottom: new chain, cassette, chainrings, bottom bracket, pedals, rear derailleur, and cables and housings for both derailleurs. It's official: there is not a single original component left on the bike. Many thanks to the guys at XM Sports for helping me out.
