Today I set off on a detour up into the mountains of Queretaro to visit a friend. I was out early knowing that it would be a long ride to get there in one day. Through Tequisquiapan and Cadeyreta the road was flat with a decent shoulder, then the climbing began after Ezequiel Montes. It was hot and windy as soon as the sun burned off the morning chill. The landscape here is desert with nopales and other various types of cactus. I got up as high as 2,300 meters then dropped down through Vizarron all the way to 1,700 at the bottom of a canyon before the road began to climb again heading up towards San Joaquín. I hit 2,400 meters, then the road dropped again, then another climb up to 2,400 as I entered San Joaquín around 5 o'clock. I set up in a Colombian restaurant waiting for my friend to get out of work. A sudden downpour hit, I was lucky to have arrived just before otherwise I would have been soaked through. My buddy showed up and we spent a few hours caching up on the last 4 years before going out for a delicious dinner of bistec a la mexicana. The town is quiet, apparently most people are away for Christmas vacation.
