I say goodbye to C in the courtyard of the Wedding appartment block. I'm going to miss her. I've got a slightly sick feeling of trepidation for what may lie ahead, but at least for tonight I have a planned destination: Burg, to the east of Berlin in Spreewald forest, where a friend of mine is house-sitting for a week.
I wend my way out of Berlin for the last time. I've got bicycle maps for East Germany but the signage is so good on the paths I don't have any trouble making my way east towards Spreewald. 135 kilometers later I pull up to my friend's cabin at about 6pm, feeling triumphant that I could ride hard all day straight through. This friend has an allergy to birch trees, which are currently in bloom, rendering him pretty much immobile. He's been staying inside eating nuts and bread for a week straight waiting for the birch pollen to calm down. I've just burned about 4,000 calories and could eat a horse. Needless to say we are on different wavelengths at the moment so I'm only going to stay the night.
