Sometimes when traveling by bicycle I wonder that if I knew what the day had in store for me, would I even get out of bed. It starts out innocuously enough, breakfast at the hotel followed by an alternately rainy and sunny morning. By noon the sun is stronga and it gets hot. A big climb before arriving in Vézelay, a town which is apparently considered by many to be the starting point for the Santiago de la Compostela pilgrimage. I buy a map of the pilgrimage route thinking it might help in terms of lodging and food, since I will be more or less following it down to Le Lot.

Vézelay street. Vézelay is the starting point for the Saint Jacques de la Compostelle pilgrimage route that goes to Spain.

I fall victim to the holiday weekend again today. I start looking for places to stay for the night around 5pm but everything is closed. Then I run into a prolonged stretch with no towns at all. I end up deciding to head for Nevers (a good-sized city) anyways, in spite of the rain and the darkness, I finally roll into town after midnight. 1am I get a room at an Ibis Hotel. Sucks but it does the trick in an emergency. Traveling without reservations and without camping gear in France is a bit of a nightmare.
