I spend the rest of the afternoon just riding around looking at the architecture of the downtown area. It must have been completely rebuilt in the not-too-distant past, I don't see much that isn't new-looking or completely restored.

Treated myself to late-afternoon snack

My friends arrive in the evening, we are staying at the Carlton, a posh hotel in a posh district of Singapore. It's always funny to show up at a place like this on a loaded bicycle, all dirty and sweaty, asking to check in. The employees always have a look of disbelief on their face when I say I'm checking in. I leave the bike with the concierge for 3 days...no plans on riding it while I'm in this hotel. The concierge asks me repeatedly: is this a bicycle? No, it's a tennis racket? Shower and off we go for an overpriced but delicious Indian dinner down on the canal quay.
